I run into my old high school friend. She invites me to her
ten-year-old son’s birthday party. I have not seen her in years, but I still
agree to go. I go to her house and proceed up her walkway. While approaching
her house it occurs to me that I have no gift, not even a card. Then I remember
I have cash with me. I pull a crumpled $20 bill out of my pocket but I decide
that this is too much, so I fish out a $10 bill instead. I walk into her house
and there is no one around. I stand and wait. A teenage girl with long brown
hair, a scarf used as a headband, and a blue midi style winter coat walks into
the kitchen. She smiles at me, says nothing, and goes to get a drink of water
before leaving. I watch her leave and wait.
